Byline: SEAN HIGGINS
If you're an American looking to buy cut-rate prescription drugs from Canada, you might want to take that trip up north right now. Canada is seriously looking at clamping down on sales to Yanks.
Health Minister Ujjal Dosanjh is mulling several restrictions such as preventing pharmacies from filling prescriptions for non-Canadians and creating lists of drugs that can't be exported. The government may act this month.
"He's waiting to get the recommendations from (provincial) officials," said Adele Blanchard, spokeswoman for Dosanjh.
Canadian officials caution that no final decision has been made. But Dosanjh has indicated the government won't hesitate to shut down the sales if they are found to harm the price or availability of drugs for Canadians.
A source in the Canadian International Pharmacy Association, which represents the e-pharmacies, said the government faces heavy pressure to shut them down.
"Right now there's a huge debate over whether this is a trade issue or a health issue," said the source. "We may lose, we may not."
