NEW YORK -- The SMITH & WOLLENSKY RESTAURANT GROUP agreed to pay $164,000 to 23 immigrant workers in consolidating four federal lawsuits alleging job discrimination and wage and hour violations. The 18-unit upscale steakhouse chain's settlement also quiets year-long, weekly employee picketing demonstrations at two of the company's midtown Manhattan operations --Park Avenue Cafe and Cite--where the allegations originated. The lawsuits were filed in November 2003 and involved the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the National Labor Relations Board and the Department of Labor.
