Feb. 2--Police Detective John Calabrese has patrolled the hallways of West Milford High School since September, counseling students and working to prevent bullying and fistfights.

But soon, Calabrese and New Jersey's 700 other school resource officers will add terrorism preparedness to their jobs.

At a press conference Tuesday, acting Governor Codey kicked off a new "safe schools" effort, which will include comprehensive security assessments of all schools, police inspections at school construction sites and guidelines for daily school security procedures.

Police officers dedicated to homeland security duties, the state's Domestic Security Preparedness Task Force and other law-enforcement agencies will be responsible for implementing the program.

The initiative also will mean new duties for law-enforcement officers already on patrol in some schools. School resource officers, or SROs, traditionally have focused on the softer side of police work, such as student counseling, coordinating social services and building ties between the police department and local community.
