NYSE stocks rose for their second straight session Tuesday, one day before the Fed announces its decision on short-term interest rates. The Dow gained 0.6%, while the S&P 500 added 0.7% to reclaim its 50-day average. Small-cap stocks again led, with the S&P 600 advancing 0.8%. NYSE trade was slightly higher.
The Dow benefited from a 6% jump by component stock American Express, after the credit card, travel and financial services giant said it'll spin off its personal finance unit.
Managed health care providers scored some of the biggest gains Tuesday among IBD's 197 industry groups. Sierra Health Services leapt 3.47 to a new closing high of 58.40, rising out of a seven-week consolidation on four times usual trade. The HMO earned 83 cents a share in the fourth quarter, up 4% from last year and 6 cents above views. Revenue slid 11% to $332.7 million.
Among others in the group, Coventry Health Group added 1.43 to 58.33 and WellChoice 0.97 to 54.20, both new highs on higher-than-normal turnover.
