New Media: Phil Anschutz, a pro-family, pro-business billionaire, is launching a chain of newspapers to shake up the old liberal media in major cities, including Washington. Old news gatekeepers are justifiably worried.
On Tuesday, Anschutz -- a turnaround artist who made his fortune in oil, rail, telecom and entertainment -- rolled out the Washington Examiner, which will be the chain's flagship.
The new full-color tabloid has the Washington Post twitching, judging from all the ads it's running. The Post is already feeling heat from conservative rivals like the Washington Times, which goes after stories it won't touch. The Post also seems suddenly self-conscious about its liberal bias.
But here's what really has the Post looking over its shoulder: The Examiner will be delivered free to homes of Post subscribers, some of whom complain about the paper's predictably pro-Democrat bias, long and tedious stories, and heavy, multisection format.
Anschutz is charging no subscription fee (or single-copy price) for his lighter, tighter and brighter daily. The Examiner will have 64 pages and start with a circulation of 260,000.
