Marsico 21st Century Fund has a small portfolio, but its holdings cover a lot of territory.
The focused fund holds only 40 names. Yet they range from small to large caps.
Triple its size since IBD profiled it on Sept. 3, 2003, the $343 million fund's uncommon strategy has worked well over time.
Going into Tuesday, its three-year annual average gain was 16.28% vs. a 0.46% loss for large-cap growth funds tracked by Morningstar Inc. and a 3.21% gain for the S&P 500.
So far this year the fund returned -3.91% vs. -3.28% for its peers and -2.53% for the S&P 500.
Most of its large-cap holdings are market leaders, whose earnings rises are expected to top the market's.
