HCA beats as taxes, bad debt fall
The hospital operator earned 70 cents a share in Q4, up 21% and 4 cents over views, boosted by a lower tax rate and bad-debt expense. Revenue rose 5% to $5.9 bil. Hospital and surgical centers in operation for over a year increased their revenue per admission by 6.5%, but same facility admissions fell 1.4%. HCA sees '05 profit of $2.75-$2.90 a share vs. views of $2.83. Shares rose 1% to 45.
Medicare to add impotence drugs
The government's new prescription benefits will cover sexual performance drugs like Pfizer's Viagra, Eli Lilly's Cialis and GlaxoSmithKline's Levitra, along with high blood pressure and heart disease medications. The law, which takes effect Jan. 1, 2006, says impotence drugs will be prescribed only when medically necessary. Pfizer fell 1% to 23.86; Lilly rose 1% to 54.76; Glaxo dipped 2 cents to 44.55.
