Choo-choo. Chugga-chugga. It's full steam ahead for the holiday movies with "The Polar Express" leading the way to another magical season for movies for kids.
Here's what's coming over the holidays.
Opening November 10 is "The Polar Express," the movie based on the picture book by Chris Van Allsburg. Tom Hanks stars in this animated movie of the book most of you read when you were younger.
We yakked with writer and artist Chris Van Allsburg about seeing his creation come to life on the big screen. Chris wrote the book 20 years ago (its publishing anniversary will be official in 2005). "To see the story and pictures come to life seems like magic," says Chris.
Chris still remembers the inspiration for the book. "In my imagination, I saw a train standing still in a woodland setting." The more he thought about the train, he thought about what it would be like to get on a train and you could choose the destination. The train was in a snowy setting and that led him to imagine a Christmastime setting with a train bound for the North Pole. The journey would be "like a magic carpet ride, only on a train."
Chris is amazed at how well the film folks got on board with his Caldecott-winning train tale. You may want to make this movie your first stop on the holiday movie express. (G)
"The Incredibles," which opens Friday, looks like incredible fun. It's the sixth film from Pixar, the people who created "Toy Story." (PG)
