September is National Youth Soccer month. The Yak thought this would be a great time for a story about Freddy Adu, the 15-year-old soccer superstar.
For many kids, fall weekends mean soccer. Not that long ago, an outstanding young player from the Washington, D.C., area was lacing up his cleats for Saturday afternoon soccer games and dreaming of playing on a pro team. Now he's a soccer superstar. If you haven't guessed, we're talking about Freddy Adu, who is finishing his first season with the soccer team D.C. United.
We had a chance to yak with Freddy during a sports phone conference when the team took on the Columbus Crew of Ohio recently.
Freddy's story should be made into a movie--and maybe it will be someday.
Freddy's home was in Tema, Ghana. Like most kids in his town, he played soccer for fun. At age 8, his family moved to the United States and settled in Maryland, near the nation's capital. At 13 he became a U.S. citizen.
His soccer skills quickly made him a star. He did so well at soccer, he was invited to a school in Bradenton, Florida, that specializes in helping young people develop their sports skills while studying. At the school, Freddy played soccer with the United States Under-17 National Team.
It wasn't long before Freddy's skills were spotted by the pros.
