Feb. 2--PHUKET -- The World Tourism Organisation yesterday criticised moves by some countries to promote their tourism destinations as an alternative to tsunami-stricken Asian nations.

Francesco Frangialli, the secretary-general of the United Nations tourism body, said such moves were unfair and indecent in light of the Dec 26 tragedy, and singled out nations in the Pacific, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean for such actions.

"Any country that seeks to profit from the suffering of others would not be worthy of being a member of the World Tourism Organisation," he said yesterday at an emergency international forum on reviving tourism in tsunami-hit countries.
