Central bank defends its role in soft-loan programme for victims.
Feb. 2--The Bank of Thailand yesterday denied allegations that tight lending conditions were hindering disbursements of financial aid to tsunami victims in the southern provinces.
M.R. Pridiyathorn Devakula, the central bank governor, rebutted charges that unclear guidelines over a 30-billion-baht soft-loan programme had led to delays in new assistance loans.
Allegations that banks were reluctant to process loans to borrowers in default due to uncertainties over provisioning and accounting rules were also false.
M.R. Pridiyathorn said the charges had been made by "bankers at a state-owned bank", and were both "inaccurate and ill-intentioned."
