What does South Dakota have to do with celebrated author and filmmaker Oscar Micheaux? A lot! Micheaux's 7 novels and 12 surviving films (he made 44 films) were inspired by experiences in his "beloved Rosebud" country in South Dakota. The year 2004 marks the 90th year since Micheaux left his Gregory, South Dakota, homestead. To celebrate his life as a homesteader, author, and pioneer filmmaker, the annual Oscar Micheaux Film Festival was started in 1996.

The festival's main purpose is to foster greater understanding among the three groups of Americans whose histories form the backdrop of this area of the Great Plains: the Lakota Sioux, the European immigrant …
