BRITAIN'S Department of Trade and Industry has launched a GBP42m ($79m) fund to support the development of large-scale wave and tidal power generation projects.
Companies with plans for building demonstration power generation systems off the UK coast will be able to apply for grants and revenue support from the government fund.
British government officials have set a target of producing 10% of the country's electricity supplies from renewable energy sources by 2010 and has an aspiration to double this by 2020.
After pushing offshore wind power generation technology through to a commercial industry, the DTI is hoping to do the same for wave and tidal power.
'The marine renewables sector is at a critical point in its development from pipe dream, through research and development, to commercial viability,' said UK Energy Minister Mike O'Brien.
