THE GOVERNMENT will send Navy ships to Sabah to ferry home the estimated 170,000 undocumented Filipinos who face deportation after Malaysia's amnesty program for illegal migrant workers ended yesterday.
Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo has reconvened the Philippine Inter-Agency Task Force to facilitate an "orderly repatriation" from the time they leave Sabah until they arrive in Tawi-Tawi, Foreign Undersecretary Jose Brillantes said yesterday.
"We're sending as many [ships] as necessary," he said in a hastily called briefing. "This will entice Filipinos in Malaysia to come home, especially those who have availed of the amnesty but do not have the funds for the trip to the Philippines."
But even as it braced for the tough task of repatriating thousands of illegal workers, the government remained hopeful the Malaysian government would grant its motion for a month-long extension of the amnesty period.
