PRESIDENT Macapagal-Arroyo has appointed Justice Romeo C. Brawner as the new presiding justice of the Court of Appeals, a Supreme Court statement said yesterday.

Brawner took his oath before Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. on Friday afternoon after acting CA presiding justice, Eubolo Verzola, died that same day due to a lingering heart ailment, the statement said.

Brawner bested two other nominees for the post-CA 5th Division chair Justice Ruben T. Reyes and 7th Division chair Portia C. Alino-Hormachuelos. Brawner, 69, is set to retire on Sept. 17.

Brawner, who hails from Kiangan, Ifugao province, taught law for 24 years and served as a prosecutor from 1964 to 1975. Philip C. Tubeza
