WHILE I deplore the killings of fellow journalists and the apparent government inaction in most of them, I don't see why the vigilante killings in Davao City and Cebu City should be linked to the murders of journalists.
The Brussels-based International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), which blames the government on the slow action or inaction on the murders of journalists, should make a distinction between journalists and criminals.
The vigilantes in Cebu and Davao cities were only after criminals who did harm to innocent citizens in their areas.
The executions carried out against criminals in the two cities were desperate measures to stem the tide of criminality. Whether it is right or wrong, it was not for the IFJ to make a judgment because Brussels does not have the kind of peace and order problem we have here.
The IFJ should have asked ordinary citizens in Cebu and Davao cities about their views on vigilante killings.
