GENERAL SANTOS CITY-Gov. Miguel Dominguez expressed alarm over the continuous dumping of oil, grease and wastes into the Sarangani Bay, calling on government agencies and the private sector to cooperate or "I will be your biggest nightmare."
In a meeting last week, he called on a multi-agency group to closely monitor the disposal of oil and grease by shipping, canning and fishing firms following reports of an oil slick in Sarangani Bay.
"I would be your biggest nightmare if I do not see any cooperation from you," the governor warned.
Dominguez called various concerned government agencies and other stakeholders to a meeting after seeing, during an aerial inspection, a wide stretch of oil slick in some parts of the bay, particularly near the Makar Wharf and the General Santos City fish port.
A study conducted in 2001 by the Coastal Resource Management Project (CRMP) said "oil and grease seem to be the most common pollutants."
The study said oil and grease came mostly from major shipping firms, fishing companies, canneries and multinational corporations along the industrial strip of coastal Barangays Labangal, Calumpang and Tambler here.
