The Talents and Artists Managers Association (Tama) is urgently seeking the intervention of President Macapagal-Arroyo, on behalf of some 197,000 Filipino overseas performing artists in Japan facing repatriation.
The Japanese government has declared its intention to impose stricter rules on OPAs to curb suspected "human trafficking. "
Jograd de la Torre, Tama president, said "corrupt and abusive labor practices" were the culprit. "And no matter how talented or legitimate our OPAs are," he said, "they will always be willing victims."
He said his group has drafted an Executive Order which they hope to submit to Ms Arroyo for consideration. She is the OPAs' only hope now, De la Torre said.
Tama is asking the President to create an "honest-to-goodness" monitoring center that will oversee the OPAs' general situation and daily activities. To ensure objectivity and efficiency, De la Torre said, the center should be operated by concerned artists and NGOs not connected in any ...
