WHEN the Monta[currency]a Jewels recruited veteran Alex Compton, coach Robert Sison knew his team's fortune in the PBL Open Championship is bound to improve.
"Alex is on my side, kampante ako kapag nandiyan siya (I'm confident when he's around)," said Sison after the Jewels secured their first finals appearance in seven years. "When we got him before the start of the season, I was so confident. I really wanted Alex on my team, he gave us stability."
And Compton's skills and leadership will again prove to be crucial when the Jewels battle the Welcoat Paintmasters in Game 1 of their best-of-five championship series at 4 p.m. today at the Makati Coliseum.
Meanwhile, Magnolia-FEU will try to shrug off its semifinal collapse when it guns for a third-place finish against Granny Goose in a knockout match at 2 p.m.
It will be Welcoat's 10th finals appearance, so unlike Monta[currency]a, the experience is nothing new for the Paintmasters.
Even Welcoat coach Caloy Garcia was a member of the squad that bagged the championship in 2002.
