PRESIDENT Macapagal-Arroyo yesterday ordered a crackdown against "cybersex" dens, a silently popular Internet-based past-time that markets mostly women to online users, which has turned in handsome profits for its operators.
"I call on the people to report these operations to the nearest police station," she said in her speech at the Philippine National Police's 14th anniversary rites at Camp Crame yesterday."
The President also commended the PNP for initiating a drive against cybersex den operators. Police had conducted raids in "hot spots" such as the cities of Angeles and San Fernando in Pampanga, and Las Pi[currency]as City.
But despite the "aggressive" PNP campaign, the agency's Criminal Investigation and Detection Group had expressed the need for a clearer law against cybersex.
The Anti-Trafficking of Persons Act of 2003 is not enough to prosecute and penalize operators of cybersex dens, CIDG officer in charge Rodolfo "Boogie" Mendoza had explained. What is needed is a provision in the law that would punish mere possession of pornographic materials, he added.
