THE ISLAMIC CALL to prayer was broadcast by new loudspeakers inside a sparkling air-conditioned room in Greenhills, San Juan.
It was time for Salatu-z-Zuhr, the Muslims' noontime prayer.
Men and women who arrived at the ground floor of the four-story parking building of the Greenhills Shopping Center went to separate absolution rooms. Women used a different door to enter the musallah or prayer area and a green curtain separated the two sexes.
The Muslims are practicing their faith in the heart of Christian Greenhills, thanks to the Christian company running the shopping center.
"It's like a hotel," Rex Dimacuta, secretary general of the Muslim traders association in Greenhills, described the new musallah. "We are very thankful (and) we intend to maintain it really well."
