BRANDING them as "murderers," President Macapagal-Arroyo yesterday ordered the arrest of two brothers whom she linked to illegal mining on Mt. Diwalwal, and the fielding of a new security force in the area believed to contain $18 billion worth of gold deposits.
Speaking at the 14th anniversary ceremony of the Philippine National Police, Ms Arroyo identified the brothers as Tata and Edgar Sala, whom she branded as "the centers of gravity of illegal mining in Diwalwal."
"The chief PNP shall include the murderers Tata Sala and his brother Edgar Sala ... in the most wanted lists and the chief PNP shall effect their immediate arrest," she said.
Ms Arroyo said she had also ordered PNP Director General Edgar Aglipay and Armed Forces Chief of Staff Gen. Efren Abu to replace the existing police and military contingents in the mining site with the 402nd Infantry Brigade and a select PNP unit.
The President did not say why she called the brothers murderers. The brothers were among several people previously linked to the June 2003 killing of Mayor Joel Brillantes of Monkayo, Compostela Valley.
