(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO-Alleged vested interests of local officials over lands, unaccounted donations and missing logs have delayed the resettlement of more than 1,000 families left homeless by the flash floods and landslides in Dingalan, Aurora, since November, the parish priest there told the Inquirer yesterday.
"It has been two months and not one family has been relocated," Fr. Antonio Evangelio, speaking by phone, said.
He said Mayor Jaime Ylarde had refused to use a declared settlement in Barangay Tanauan because he, municipal budget officer Ester Felipe and other department heads were building their homes in the same village.
Ylarde, he added, insisted on developing a 1.5-hectare lot in Barangay Caragsakan despite existing claims on the same land by 40 farmers.
The disputed area was bulldozed in December without consultations with the claimants and surveyed without a permit. It is part of a four-hectare land being claimed by 300 farmers since 1996, Evangelio said.
Ylarde, reached by phone, said he was not having a house built in Tanauan. He confirmed, though, that some department heads were building their homes there.
