Wellington, Feb 1 - Spare parts from pigs may not only give humans a new heart or kidney...the patient could also end up with a dose of the PERVs: porcine endogenous retrovirus.

Nobody knows for certain if this virus is dangerous to humans, and -- so far -- no one has been able to produce a PERV-free pig.

Some doctors fear such transplants could potentially lead to an epidemic of human illness that could not be controlled or treated.

New Zealand's Bioethics Council said today a special law might have to be passed to enforce lifetime monitoring of patients who received animal organs or other tissues.

The United States National Institute of Standards and Technology is spending over $3 million over three years in a bid to develop a PERV-free pig through cloning, but pigs' hearts have already been transplanted to humans.
