New machines raise hopes in drought-hit areas.
Feb. 1--The Agriculture Department has teamed up with Thammasat University to develop seeding and broadcasting machines with the potential to help overcome drought and labour-shortage problems among rice farmers.
Suraweth Krishanasreni, a senior agricultural engineering expert with the Agriculture Department, said the machines were suitable for growing fragrant Hom Mali 105 rice in Thung Kula Rong Hai, the Northeast's drought-stricken area.
The 10-million-rai area, mainly in Roi Et, is the proven best plantation area for various types of fragrant rice with a total output of about 3.5 million tonnes of fragrant paddy per year.
