DARWIN, Feb 1 Asia Pulse - Uranium miner Energy Resources of Australia (ASX:ERA) today left open the door to possible future mining at its controversial Jabiluka site in Kakadu National Park.
Under a landmark deal, traditional owners have the right to veto the future development of the Northern Territory mine.
However, ERA chief executive Harry Kenyon-Slaney today said the company hoped to get the traditional owners on side of the valuable uranium deposit in the future.
"I think you should never say never, but it is certainly not up to us," he told ABC radio.
"We have in an agreement that we have put together, with traditional owners presented a power of veto over Jabiluka.
"We will attempt to work with them to understand the benefits to all parties, and there are very considerable benefits - both financial benefits and also social and cultural benefits - if we can agree on what those are.
"We are determined to try and find a way forward for the benefit of everybody, because we believe that nobody wishes to see the town of Jabiru die and I think the town of Jabiru would suffer enormously if there wasn't a significant mining operation there."
