SEOUL, Feb 1 Asia Pulse - The government said Tuesday it will revise laws and regulation in preparation for further opening of the domestic market to imported agricultural goods.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said the grain management act needs to be changed to allow the sale of imported rice directly to consumers.
South Korea concluded an agreement with nine countries at the end of 2004 to extend rice import waivers for an additional 10 years in exchange for allowing a gradual increase in the amount of rice allowed in under a mandatory regime and the free retail of that rice onto the local market from this year.
Officials at the ministry said that once the World Trade Organization approves the agreement around March, lawmakers will then have to implement the changes.
Failure to do so could result in a serious disruption, while moves to reject the outcome of the talks could see South Korea opt for a full tariff system.
