VIGAN CITY, Feb 1 Asia Pulse - The National Tobacco Administration (NTA) said the anticipated higher prices of flue-cured tobacco this year due to short supply in the market would benefit the farmers.
NTA administrator Carlitos Encarnacion admitted that this was due to the slight decrease in the number of farmers who planted tobacco this year.
Encarnacion cautioned, however, that the great demand for tobacco in the country would not make the tobacco industry a sunset industry.
"What we need to do is to produce high quality tobacco to meet the quality demand by the cigarette manufacturers," he said.
The NTA chief is optimistic that in the next tobacco planting season, farmers who did not plant tobacco this year, will be back because of the positive impact of tobacco prices this year.
