TAIPEI, Feb 1 Asia Pulse - Taiwan will make use of its advantage in innovation as well as research and development (R&D) to compete with other countries economically, Minister of Economic Affairs Ho Mei-yueh said Monday.
With Asia having replaced North America and Europe to become Taiwan's major export market over the past decade, the regional economic integration of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is posing a challenge to the island, Ho said.
Taiwan must enhance its capability in innovation and R&D, diversify its industries and investment, and encourage businesses to set up R&D centers or operational headquarters in Taiwan to cope with the challenges, Ho said.
A total of 80 Taiwanese enterprises and 25 multinational enterprises have established R&D centers in Taiwan to date, with 252 new products being developed in 2004, Ho noted.
