Even allowing for the monumental challenges facing Punta Gorda after Hurricane Charley, it's hard to make a case that the city has been well run in recent years.

The embarrassing search for a new city manager exemplifies the problems. Despite receiving more than nine months' notice from outgoing City Manager Willard Beck, the council still hasn't found a replacement. Beck retired last week.

Other important projects, such as improving Laishley Park, have languished with no visible progress.
