Kerry DiGiacomo spelled the word "trilogy" correctly and earned herself a sequel.
DiGiacomo, a sixth-grader at Edisto Beach Elementary School, will compete at the annual "SpellBound!" competition at Charleston Southern University for the second year in a row.
She won this year's Colleton County School District "spell-off" after a suspenseful back-and-forth volley with runner-up Sarah Smoak, an eighth-grader at Colleton Middle School.
DiGiacomo and Smoak each spelled several words correctly in the final rounds until Smoak, also a former district winner, slipped on the word, "cosmetic."
