Federal health officials continue to seek solutions to the U.S. influenza vaccine shortage, including procuring up to 4 million doses from GlaxoSmithKline, Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson said during a press conference.

GlaxoSmithKline began shipping doses of its Fluarix vaccine from a facility in Germany last month and at press time expected to deliver all the vaccine by the middle of this month, according to a company statement.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has directed the new doses to places with the greatest need and to patients in the designated high-risk groups.

At press time, Sec. Thompson and other federal health officials were also in discussions with vaccine makers in Canada and Switzerland to obtain even more doses.

The Fluarix vaccine, approved in more than 30 countries but not yet approved in the United States, will be available under an investigational new drug (IND) application. This means all patients given Fluarix must sign an informed ...
