JAPAN TEAM ATTAINS BREAKTHROUGH IN "MOLECULAR SURGERY" ON CARBON FULLERENE--Researchers at Kyoto University in Japan have succeeded in trapping a hydrogen molecule inside a carbon fullerene with the "molecular surgical method." A carbon fullerene is a nanoscale structure which comprises a number of carbon atoms arranged in a sphere or tube and has unique electrical properties. The Kyoto university team used a well-known fullerene comprising 60 carbon atoms, often called "buckminsterfullerene." The Japanese research team's achievement, reported in the Jan. 14 issue of the Science journal, may open the way for a widespread use of carbon fullerenes …
