3 Arts Club renovation draws sharp opposition.

Jan. 27--For more than 90 years, women artists from across the world lived, worked and socialized at The Three Arts Club in the Gold Coast neighborhood--amid the Byzantine architectural splendor of a building designed by one of Chicago's most famed architects.

But last summer, the not-for-profit organization that runs the club sent its residents packing in anticipation of a multimillion dollar renovation of the building. The four-story brick and terra cotta edifice at 1300 N. Dearborn St. was designed by John Holabird of Holabird & Roche and opened in 1914.

Just how soon, or if, the organization can start work lies with the Commission on Chicago Landmarks, which next week will consider whether the proposed $17 million renovation would retain the building's architectural integrity.

Because the city named the building a landmark in 1981, renovation cannot ...
