Heroin treatment slots increased in five cities. (federal aid to drug treatment programs)

On the heels of new data indicating increases in heroin-related incidents in emergency rooms in New York City, Newark, Baltimore, Detroit and Seattle, HHS Secretary Lewis W. Sullivan, MD, announced $3.8 million to expand heroin treatment.

The grants will augment existing programs, add more treatment slots quickly and will provide seed funding to start new treatment programs.

In announcing the grants, which will come out of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, HHS Secretary Sullivan said, "As we stated when we released DAWN data on these cities a few months ago, heroin use and associated public health problems in these cities gave us warning signs indicating that …
