The idea that students at community colleges come straight from high school and study for two years before moving on is slowly dissolving, according to this year's Community College Survey of Student Engagement.
The study found that many community college students spend more than four years working on a degree at several schools and many never even earn an associate's degree. Two-thirds of community college students attend part-time and some try out several colleges, and almost one in six students already has a bachelor's degree.
"People just don't go to school like they used to," said Kay McClenney, the survey's director and an adjunct professor at the University of Texas at Austin.
