Two students who sued Wells College in New York to prevent the school from admitting men until after they graduate in 2008 lost their bid for an injunction to stop it.
Acting State Supreme Court Justice Peter Corning said they failed to prove fraud or breach of contract. The students claimed they were deceived about attending a women's college, after Wells officials recently announced that the school would accept men starting next fall.
Corning said the case was about "balancing the inconvenience of two students against the annihilation of the college." Wells President Lisa Marsh Ryerson said the college faced extinction, losing $5 million a year due to declining enrollment.
Wells does not appear to be in financial crisis. Its endowment is higher than ever and the school recently got a bequest of more than $7 million. But Ryerson said, "a beautiful college with an ...
