The record companies must see something to this SACD thing because now RCA has jumped into the fray with a collection of SACD versions of their old "Living Stereo" recordings. The idea is that many of these old recordings were originally made with microphones to the left, center, and right of the stage, the three channels subsequently mixed down into two-channel stereo. With the availability of six channels of sound on SACDs, the original mix of three front channels can be utilized to its fullest. And for those of us who don't own an SACD player, the discs are hybrids, meaning there is also a regular two-channel layer that can be played on any CD machine. The theory is that the regular two-channel layer is even better than what RCA previously provided in their "Living Stereo" series because the sound has been remastered via DSD, Direct Stream Digital.
