Geri Allen: The Life of a Song (Telarc SACD-63598)

I should point out at the outset that although this is a SACD release, my listening was done to the CD layer in 2.1 mode (newspeak for stereo speakers plus subwoofer). No, I still have not set up a surround system, and no, I'm not sure when I finally will get around to it.

Even when auditioned as a standard CD, though, The Life of a Song is sonically impressive. Dave Holland's bass sounds a little small, but it seems to sound that way on all his recordings, so I will assume that is the sound he wants to convey. The overall sonic balance is good, as are the dynamics.

At first listen, and several thereafter, I was unimpressed by the music. Not that there was anything wrong with it, or off-putting, rather that it just seemed uninspired. I got the same impression when I listened to Geri Allen live a year ago as part of Charles Lloyd's Quintet: she played well but did not seem to have a distinctive voice on the piano. The net effect here is much the same, but redeemed partially by DeJohnette's hard work behind his drum kit.

This is a very good release, musically pleasing and sonically satisfying, but in the final analysis, it just does not quite scale the heights you would hope for given the pedigree of the protagonists. Still, it is a very fine outing and I suspect that many jazz fans will react to it more positively than I did, so I do not feel hesitant about giving it a recommendation.

Berlioz: Requiem Frank Lopardo, tenor/Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus/Robert Spano (Telarc SACD 60627)

Most classical music fans probably already have a favorite recording of the Berlioz Requiem in their collection, but perhaps not yet an SACD version. I would suspect this would be a good one to purchase for those with surround systems. Although I listened in 2.1 stereo, I was impressed by the sonics, and by the performance, and I would imagine this recording would be a real humdinger when heard through a good surround system.
