ST. PETERSBURG -- It took much longer than expected, but Jeff Niemann is finally a member of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

The Rays signed their first round pick from June's First-Year Player Draft to a five-year, $5.2-million major league contract that included a $3.2 million signing bonus Thursday.

"It's a load off your shoulders," Niemann said via phone from Houston. "There's so much getting into finally getting something to work out. We just wanted to get a fair deal within the market."
