Speed inks deal
American Scott Speed has signed to race the 2005 GP2 season (formerly FIA F3000) with the iSport International team (AW, Jan. 10). Speed says in addition to the season in GP2, he will test a Red Bull Formula One car later this year.
Jonathan Williams, son of Sir Frank Williams, is on iSport's board of directors. The team is made up of members of the Petrobras Junior team that ran Bruno Junqueira to the F3000 title in 2000.
Steiner joins Red Bull
Red Bull Racing is expected to announce this week Gunther Steiner will be its new technical director. Steiner was Jaguar Racing's technical director in 2002, and briefly served as its team principal after Bobby Rahal's departure. He left to join the Opel DTM program, which will cease at the end of 2005.
Big move
The Sports Car Club of America's board of directors has voted to move the Runoffs, its historic national championship event for amateur road racers, from Mid-Ohio to Heartland Park Topeka. 2005 will mark the final SCCA Runoffs for Mid-Ohio, which has hosted the event since 1994. Heartland Park's three-year deal begins in 2006. New track owner Raymond Irwin (who also operates Blackhawk Farms in Rockton, Illinois) has pledged major improvements to the facility, including new pavement, control tower and garages, aided by $5 million from the city of Topeka.
