MELBOURNE, Jan 19 Asia Pulse - Melbourne is aiming to be the first airport in Australia to host flights by the world's biggest passenger aircraft - a new 555-seat, double-decker Airbus A380.
Victorian Minister for State and Regional Development John Brumby said work would begin on April 5 to widen the airport's 3.7km runway by 15 metres as part of a A$220 million (US$165 million) airport upgrade.
"The runway works will be the largest single airfield construction project undertaken at Melbourne Airport since it opened in 1970 and will reinforce our status as Australia's best international gateway," Mr Brumby said.
