Jan. 19--After all the long lines at flu clinics, after all the anxiety over getting the shots, federal health officials now have a new headache:
About 2.5 million to 3 million doses of flu vaccine are going begging because states have not asked for them. That includes about 22,000 doses turned down by Kansas and about 36,500 declined by Missouri.
While similar quantities of flu vaccine often go unused in a typical flu season, the serious shortage of vaccine this year has made health officials all the more determined to make sure shots are not wasted.
With the worst of the flu season likely yet to come, officials say there is still time to get a shot.
"This is a time when the vaccination season is usually over," said Jeanne Santoli of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Immunization Program. "But this is still a good time to be vaccinated if the disease hasn't peaked in your community."
