Programme controller, Radio Jackie South West London's legendary pirate station Radio Jackie served the area from 1969 until it was closed down by the regulatory authorities in 1985. It was the training ground for many popular broadcasters including Radio One's Dave Pearce and hypnotist Paul McKenna.
Radio Jackie campaigned for the legal right to broadcast for many years, but was frustrated by the Radio Authority's award of the licence for South West London to Thames FM in 1996. But Thames FM's reach of less than 1% contributed to financial problems.
In March of 2003, the original Radio Jackie management team completed the purchase of Thames FM, which was rebranded as Radio Jackie seven months later and has since won the approval of the Radio Authority's successor Ofcom to continue broadcasting until at least 2009.
