THOUSANDS of people are flocking to Peterborough health clubs and slimming groups every day in an attempt to shed the pounds they have put on over Christmas. But will the treadmills and cross-trainers fall silent when those new year's resolutions begin to fade? Gyms and keeping fit have never been more popular.
New health clubs are opening all the time to meet public demand and we are now nearly mid-way through the busiest month of the year.
One of Peterborough's major health clubs, Livingwell, is currently attracting more than 1,000 people every day and has more than 4,000 members on its books.
Claire Saunders, general manager of Livingwell, in Papyrus Road, Werrington, said the main reason for the January increase was the Christmas period.
She said: "People who used to come in once or twice a week start to come in three or four times a week. After the over-indulgence of Christmas, people put on a few pounds and feel a bit sluggish.
