Jan. 11--It's a seller's market when it comes to being a pharmacist in Alabama. New graduates of the McWhorter School of Pharmacy at Samford University are getting offers in the $94,000 to $96,000 range.

"That's for a newly minted pharmacist," said Joseph O. Dean, dean of the Birmingham pharmacy school.

CVS Corp. has labeled Alabama a challenging state when it comes to filling vacancies in its 140 stores statewide. According to spokesman Mike DeAngelis, CVS overcomes the challenge with attractive salary and benefits packages.

The competition for pharmacists has driven up salaries and spawned a culture of recruiting. …
