2005 Mazda 6 Sport Wagon
Date in fleet: Dec. 1-15 As-tested price: $28,095 Powertrain: 3.0-liter V6; fwd, six-speed automatic Output: 220 hp @ 6300 rpm, 192 lb-ft @ 5000 rpm Curb weight: 3472 lbs
RAYNAL: This is a good, solid wagon. No surprise there, really; the sedan is excellent as well. The 6 wagon is the right size-not too big, not too small-and has strong power, good steering and ride/handling. The build quality seems good, too.
There aren't many competitors, so Mazda should have no trouble selling all it can build.
Its 33 cubic feet of cargo space-60 with the rear seat folded-underscores why most SUVs are pretty dumb.
ROSS: Ford need only look within to see the solution to its problems; Mazda is producing the cars the mothership should be making. This wagon is stylish, roomy and puts out enough power to get you where you want in a hurry. The exterior design, handling and V6 make the 6 wagon almost cool, too. Interior room is great for a four- or five-person family, and the price is spot-on. I can only imagine what the Five Hundred could have looked like had Mazda designed it.
