Smart decisions? McLaren supercar also faces the ax
While we might bemoan the decision by Mercedes-Benz to delay development of the U.S.-bound Smart ForMore mini-sport/utility vehicle pending a review of costs, we find it even more troubling that new Mercedes Car Group boss Eckhard Cordes also has put the Mercedes-McLaren P8 supercar on hold.
We revealed last year (AW, Feb. 23, 2004) that Mercedes was planning a second supercar, the P8, to slot just under the Mercedes-McLaren SLR. Now our sources tell us the P8 (along with other unspecified projects) is on the shelf pending financial review. The Smart review is expected to wrap up by March, but no one is offering a timeline on the other programs.
Smart had been scheduled to arrive in the United States in the second half of 2006, but Mercedes officials are apparently discussing the business case for setting up a dealer network for a single vehicle that could be sold for a premium in the States if marketed as a Mercedes. Automotive News reports the Smart ForMore has been pulled from its planned debut at the Detroit show.
