Jan. 7--STEEL SUPPLIES ASSURED: Fast-rising demand for construction steel products in the wake of the tsunami will not lead to a shortage, according to Wikrom Vajragupta, director of the Iron and Steel Institute of Thailand.
He said yesterday that supplies were more than enough to meet the expected increase in steel demand from reconstruction as well as state-sponsored infrastructure projects.
Overall construction steel production stands at 8-9 million tonnes per year but demand is projected to increase 7-8 percent this year from four million tonnes last year. Production of steel sheets will be 6-7 million tonnes compared with demand of 5-6 million tonnes this year.
