Microsoft is being outfoxed in the Web browser market by a foe it thought it vanquished long ago.
The early success of the Mozilla Foundation's Firefox browser is at best a black eye for Microsoft. The Redmond, Wash., software king has dominated the market for years with its ubiquitous Internet Explorer, only to see its market share slip in recent months.
The Firefox browser could draw Web surfers and advertising dollars away from Microsoft's MSN Web sites. More than that, the open-source Firefox browser is another step toward a viable Linux-based personal computer for mainstream consumers seeking an alternative to Microsoft's Windows PCs.
"This is clearly another warning sign for Microsoft that a large percentage of their customer base is disenfranchised and they need to fix that," said Rob Enderle, an analyst with the Enderle Group.
Market Share Shift
Firefox has grown like wildfire since Mozilla released Firefox version 1.0 on Nov. 9. It offered a preview version for several months before that. People have downloaded about 15 million copies of the free browser.
